Note: Did the Cowboys just draft a fullback prospect in Erik Walden? He’s listed at 6?2?, 243 lbs. and 4.7 in the 40. That’s on the small side to be an outside linebacker in Dallas’ scheme, unless he’s got some crazy pass rushing skills. That’s way too slow to be a safety. On the other hand, his size and speed are almost identical to Daryl Johnston’s, who was 6?2?, 237 and ran in the 4.65-4.70 range. The colleges just don’t produce fullbacks anymore and the Cowboys had modest success turning Oliver Hoyte into a fullback. Are they trying again?
2:12 –The Cowboys take Erik Walden, a smallish DE from Middle Tennessee. He’s not in the two draft books I own. The last time the Cowboys reached that far, they landed Pat McQuistan.
The Cowboys just moved up to select Boise State CB Orlando Scandrick.
– Props to blogger cormanman, who just claimed that he’s firmly “pro-Choice” after the Cowboys’ picked Tashard Choice.
This site originated Romosexual. We are the birthplace of “Thong” Williams and now we’re sure to have a sizable pro-Choice contingent.
You guys crack me up.

Another draftday 1st?
jerryw:
when is our nxt pick?
cormanman:
I REALLY REALLY REALLY want an NT.
fordracefan:
So what picks do we have left today? And when are we going to get the WR ant NT that we need?
Travlr:
Glad we moved up a little. I was wondering why a team in need of quality and not so much quantity kept moving down.
Aside from the extra picks next year of course!
Still thinking we can pick up one each OL- DL
CHARB:
Raf,
I have complained for year’s about Jerry no addressing the secondary in the draft.
I love this draft.
MUSICCITYNORM:
next year we’ll draft 5 WR
NICKL:
Is a WR that we draft at this point going to be better than Hurd or Stanback? Unless I’m missing someone, I don’t think it’s worth giving up on either of those guys.
If Glenn doesn’t play again, we may need a veteran, but what would a 5th round rookie really do for us?
On the other hand, I DO think that we can find a guard or center who CAN make the team and provide us with some solid depth at one of our thinnest positions.
I say the next two picks will be OL and DL
NICKL:
That is unless Raf has another player in mind. I’m going with his guy as the next pick; listening to your predictions has proven to be an effective strategy thus far.
MUSICCITYNORM:
The fullback from arkansas is still on the board, right?
They pick at the top of round six and then go home, or roll out the Mexican buffet, wait until the draft ends and chase undrafted free agents.
And now that Parcells is gone, they’ll be more room at the buffet. ba-da-boosh! Thank you, I’ll be here all week. Tip your waitresses and don’t forget to try the chicken burritos!
TR2TO4TD:
okam is off the board… i like to see owen schmitt from wv… he’s still on the board right?
Adam McCloskey:
There’s still some WRs who can help out down the road on the board.
DJ Hall, Marcus Monk, Adarius Bowman.
Hall and Bowman both have marijuana troubles, but Monk is as good a citizen as you’ll find in the draft. He was the valedictorian of his HS Class, and a leader. Good Size, average hands, moderate speed.
Oh, yeah, and Monk is a Razorback.
I also like Athyba Rubin… I think he’s a true value pick here if he lasts until the next pick.
I’d like to see Rubin, then trade Bobby Carpenter so we can get Bowman or Monk.
I think we should also be calling Tommy Blake and offering him 25k as a UFA.
MUSICCITYNORM:
who do we pick?
THEAIRFORCEBAT:
Raf, what has been your opinion on the draft so far?
sgtcwby:
I want Owen Schmitt too!!!! That would be an awesome end to a awesome 2008 NFL Draft.
NICKL:
It may not be too early to call Carpenter a bust, but it is certainly too early for the organization to admit it. Remember how many chances Rogers got? and he was a 2nd rounder. He’s not going anywhere
I’m with you on Blake though.
UnconventionalWisdom:
I can’t wait until next year when the argument is made not to draft a WR b/c they don’t contribute right away. Which of course begs the question . . . .
I know Jerry really wants to add a splashy vet WR, so I guess I’ll just chill out and see what happens.
Adam McCloskey:
(facetiousness on the Carpenter trade, though I would like to see them move back into the 7th for a receiver.)
Rubin’s still available. I say we either draft him or Tommy Blake. Maybe WR Paul Hubbard. Great value picks.
Good point Unconventional. Good point.
CowboyMan:
Everyone, I really enjoyed reading your opinions this weekend. I don’t follow college football so am way behind when it comes to the draft. You guys help me follow along and get some understanding of why teams do what they do. Thanks a lot. Now it’s back to laying out my stone patio. Thanks again, GO COWBOYS!!!
Andre Woodson, Kevin O’Connell, and Josh Johnson are all still available. Eric Ainge too. Might be smart to add a QB now but I’d rather have Rubin.
ManTab:
at this point none of the WR’s left would be a better option, than TO, TG, Crayton, Hurd, Austin and Stanback. I dont expect to see a WR drafted.
cormanman:
Guys, I know we need a receiver, but please, name the ONE guy who DEFINITELY makes an impact now.
Please. Name the man.
Our organization has stated time and again that they prefer free agent WRs. It is more than clear that we have been trying very hard to trade for a WR. It is clear that we were not willing to overpay for a WR in a trade. These are all good things.
This was a weak draft for #1 caliber WRs. The #13 guy was the first off the board and lasted until the 31st pick.
You can bitch about WR all damn day long. Jerry tried to trade up to take one in the second round but couldn’t.
Please stop complaining about what we didn’t do and state EXACTLY what you would have done differently.
Yes, it is a need, but you can’t always fill every need.
Adam McCloskey:
No, but I think those 3 guys are solid developmental prospects.
CHARB:
Kam
Rubin is interesting.
WR fans..Adrain Arrington Michigan
boysfan:
I’d love to bring in Marcus Monk and maybe Erik Ainge. I’m interested to see the experts opinion on the cowboys not addressing the WR position in the draft. Maybe the cowboys organization has TOO MUCH confidence in Stanback.
Adam McCloskey:
My problem with Arrington is that he only played sparingly until this year. He also had some suspension issues.
Also, with Manningham there, he wasn’t ever a guy the defense focused on.
However, Henne was hurt a fair amount of this season, so I don’t know that we’ve seen the best of Arrington, despite his 67 catches.
I think that might be a good pick, though since he has a domestic abuse charge he’ll never get past Cincy to us.
MUSICCITYNORM:
Ruben is the highest rated nose tackle in the draft. Hes still available.
stoproyce:
Guys put down the sharp objects,we have plenty of WR we will be fine if a trade cannot still be pulled off. Josh johson Is the value pick here he is this years Matt moore. We have the corners now necessary to disarm eli and his pet cat and donovan and his new lil kitty ,and im petty sure we will be able to handle the skins additions as well. I am not worried and practically ecstatic now a backup qb in Johnson and it will be an A= in my mind.
MUSICCITYNORM:
Adam are you saying because he has a domestic he will go to Cincy ![]()
UnconventionalWisdom:
cormanman
I’m not looking for a WR to make an impact right now. I’m looking to develop one and have been looking to do so for the last 3 or 4 drafts. We’re old and thin at WR, which is a bad combination. It gets frustrating to watch the same thing year after year.
But I like the draft. When we didn’t get one in the first or second rounds I resigned myself to the fact that we weren’t going to upgrade at WR without a trade.
We’ll have no option but to pay out the nose next year to address the position, which isn’t a great thing in my opinion.
Tighthead:
Stanback wasn’t a better option than Hurd or Austin last year and they spent a fourth on him.
CHARB:
Adam McCloskey:
Funny Bengals reference
The in games I saw, Arrington didn’t drops as many balls as Manningsmoke.
MUSICCITYNORM:
Ruben is my choice, or the fullback from Arkansas
Tighthead:
UW - old and thin is right. Austin and Hurd look maxed out to me. We have two good but old guys, a great three who may be a decent two, two JAGs and a question mark.
stoproyce:
Guys i trust the coaches how many of you know how good stanback is? Lets take a deep breath the wrs were a crap shoot thats why every single team passed on every single one og them at least once. Jesus if your gonna jump do it you guys will never stop crying about wr .This was an excellent draft regardless of what happens now everything is gravy . The Jenkins pick was manna from heaven.
TR2TO4TD:
josh johnson = off the board… i’d like to see ruben or schmitt
jevans1729:
cormanman your post #25
Thank you for your words of wisdom. As Raf said we can’t make a WR out of clay. All in all, this was a very good draft. At least an A-. (The minus is for the Mendenhall rooters like me and those who are not Pro-Choice.)
Adam McCloskey:
Remember though, that was a true freshman or a Henne with a bum shoulder throwing those passes.
UnconventionalWisdom:
stoproyce
We have plenty of WRs?
chilaquiles:
Adam LOL
MUSICCITYNORM:
The Jets and Chargers both pick before us. Jets picked Ainge over Woodsen???? Maybe Woodsen. Chargers may take Ruben.
Tighthead:
stoproyce - I know the coaches didn’t play Stanback in a meaningless game against the Redskins.
TR2TO4TD:
dang… schmitt to seattle
Yeah, I want Rubin. If we hadn’t drafted Scandrick I was thinking about drafting Wesley Woodyard, OLB from Kentucky. His size and speed, plus what I saw from him in college and at the Senior Bowl says “safety” to me. Rubin’s got to be the pick though.
cormanman:
Freakin Seattle keeps taking players I like.
Now they got Schmitt.
I think NT is a bigger issue than FB, but still, it’s the damn prinicple.
Gray:
A little info on Scandrick ( don’t let him room with Pac)-
http://www.nfl.com/draft/profiles/orlando-scandrick?id=2307
Has Titus Brown from Mississippi State been selected yet?
Owen Schmitt just drafted by Seattle…
cormanman:
I would certainly hope so.
To me Ratliff is an above average to good 3-4 DE.
He is an average NT.
He should be in the DE rotation, which is very deep if it is:
Ratliff, Canty, Hatcher, and Spears.
TR2TO4TD:
rubin and peyton hillis fb from arkasas available… gotta take rubin in my mind
cormanman:
Ok, we’re almost back up.
I really want a NT or G/C but would live with BPA if it is GREAT value.
jrcowboy49:
JJ is an idiot as we completly whiffed on the 3rd round and blew it in the 4th. With all the damn trading we lost our opportunity to draft a good nose tackle and a 2nd tier wr. With JJ back in charge who is going to save us from his terrible drafts?
TR2TO4TD:
on the clock… im still excited even tho we’re in rnd 5 haha
CHARB:
FB Hillis maybe
TR2TO4TD:
for all the cowboys fans saying jj is no good… how can you say that? you don’t even know what he’s doing just yet… what if he goes out and gets a vet wr? what if stanback is nasty next year? in stead of bashin jj, just be optimistic about the season and be glad we got felix jones and mike jenkins, an absolute steal at 25
Becho:
NT please
Rybin
MUSICCITYNORM:
Hillis or Ruben
TR2TO4TD:
erik walden???
jerryw:
de walden?
staubachfan:
DE. How big is he.
MUSICCITYNORM:
What???
UnconventionalWisdom:
LB size
Becho:
lets hope rybin goes undrafted now
CHARB:
Looks like a Street Free Agent to me.
MUSICCITYNORM:
OLB not DE
TR2TO4TD:
6-2 237… he’s a pass rusher
MUSICCITYNORM:
Maybe our next fullback?
cormanman:
At 6′ 2″ and 243 that is tiny for a 3-4 DE. They must be moving him to OLB.
I can see value in a developmental player there because after Ellis is gone next year we only have Ware and Spencer.
Still, I thought we really needed a NT.
I guess Ratliff is staying at NT.
At least we finally drafted someone that no one’s ever heard of before. It was about time. Usually we do it earlier. Now all the draft sites will have to hurriedly put together a scouting report on him. Charb’s right. This guy has undrafted rookie free agent written all over him.

I will repeat-
“Thong” may be too good for Roy Williams-cuz even a thong covers one thing,
but he can’t cover Jeremy Shockey.
There’s a dig at Shockey in there if you think……
TR2TO4TD:
i think this is a wade phillips pick… he’s a bit smaller, but he had smaller linebackers at san diego play lights out… but, i think he’d be a lot more effective with a nice big run stuffing d tackle
Yeah I was all for the other picks but this one is the complimentary “who the hell is that guy?” pick.
Becho:
well i am glad we filled needs all draft long. the most glaring thing to be upset about is no NT or WR. there are alot of things to be pleased with though. namely solid picks for jones, jenkins, bennett, and choice. they all were either a good value at the spot they were taken or in jone’s case they were valued at that spot. I also realy like the extra 3rd and 4th next year
There’s always a place on the team for the 59th ranked DE in the draft.
kam - lol!
CHARB:
The buffet must of started early. I think one of Jerry grandchildren got to pick the last pick of this draft.
Hey, Jerry isn’t a young man. Maybe, he ran out of gas, after all his wheeling and dealing.
Bluecheese:
I guess I’m just ignorant, but there are only so many lb’s you can have on one team, and I think we now have pretty good depth. I agree, we need huge d-lineman to eat up space. Ratliff is undersized to keep playing NT. I honestly don’t know about any of these guys (Bryant, Okum, Rubin) but I do know they are big, and played for big time programs in a big time conference. Lets plug the big guys in. No more lb’s please. (because lets face, 232 # is a lb)
Gray:
Tashard Choice Pre-game:

I like him already!
MUSICCITYNORM:
Special team player maybe? Keith Davis is gone.
Becho:
i would not mind if the boys traded away a 5th or 6th next year to get rubin
CHARB:
Norm
If he’s special, I don’t think it has anything to do with football.
maplesyrup:
Thanks, Raf, et el. for making this draft more interesting for me…
Final thought on JJ,
- Excellent day 1 (3 for 3)
- So-SO day 2 (2 for 4… Choice and Walden IMO are strike-outs)… He got too cute with his trades and lost some real value but perfaps it can be rocovered with the 3rd and 4th we got next year.
- So, .714 batting average aint bad plus 2 mids next year gives this draft a solid “B” grade for me…
That’s my gossiple and I’m stikin’ with it…
http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/football/2008/draft/players/6450.html
MUSICCITYNORM:
There was nothing special about Keith Davis either except he could play special teams.

59th DE, I can’t stop laughing
larry,
That’s funny.
So Shockey is the ass and Thong is butt floss? LOL!
MUSICCITYNORM:
Maple check out post 81 that is impressive. Its what I want on my team.
CHARB:
Norm
It’s just a joke.
His size makes me wonder if you guys might be right about FB. He’s too small for DE, too slow to be a safety but the right size to be a fullback.
MUSICCITYNORM:
Is Raf referring to my post about him being a FB?
lets hope Walden is another McQ and surprise us with what he gives us. I remember when McQ was drafted we all were wondering if Jerry thought he was drafting McQs twin brother Paul.
MUSICCITYNORM:
You know what I remember? Last year there was some real concern we didn’t draft a nose tackle or Wide Reciever. Phew, thank God for this years draft.
CHARB:
Does Erik have a brother who is highly rated?
MUSICCITYNORM:
Jeff Fisher said Mike Williams had lost a lot of weight and looked good. That’s the reason they didn’t draft receiver early. I know its not Cowboys but I had given up on Williams.
I was only partly making a joke about him too. ScoutsInc has Walden as their 59th ranked DE. No scouting report or anything. They don’t write up scouting reports for guys they don’t think will get drafted. NFL DraftCountdown doesn’t have anything on him and neither does my Mel Kiper draft book. Kiper only ranks 98 DE’s in the draft and NFL DraftCountdown only goes to 36. So far no dice. DMN’s blog has a link to a scouting report on him.

maplesyrup:
MUSICCITYNORM,
Thanks for the you tube clip… OK, to use the ESPN baseball anaology, that speach alone gives JJ a base on balls for me… No credit for the hit, though!
TR2TO4TD:
so are we done?
seabourne:
A great first day would have been an A if we would have grabbed a solid NT in the 2nd. I think the TE is a solid pick but not a need. Someone should have taken JJ out for lunch or something and let someone draft some players. I would have felt fine with 6 solid players instead of 3 guys maybe a 4th making the team and then a bunch of camp foder. We may have gotten a 3rd and 4th for next year but JJ will just trade down for the next Kavika Pittman or LaFluer. Losing a shot at Red Bryant and Hawkins to get theses last two picks turned day two into a solid F.
scout:
Brian Stewart said Dallas was looking for a safety in the third before they traded out.
He says Scandrick had a third round grade. Coming out of the draft with one outstanding CB and one good one was very good.
sirius:
Seabourne:
I think it is worse then an F… I think it is an I for incomplete
scout,
You forgot Pacman Jones. They went heavy for secondary this year and RBs.
In the same way they went heavy for OL depth last year.
ym:
Scandrick ran a 4.32 in the 40. Wow!
Sam:
I’m going to assume that the draft is over for the Cowboys, so here’s my take:
–I like the fact that we got two solid RBs. It was an area of need coming into the draft and we addressed it.
–I also like the fact that we got two solid CBs, another area of need, although I would have preferred to have a safety in lieu of the second corner.
–I hated all the moves we made regarding TE. I’d rather have kept Fasano and used that #2 on another position. I sure hope that guy Bennett turns out to be a player, because that was a very “Redskinish” move we made by not valuing our picks.
–Really wish we would have drafted a FB at some point. I still think that is a need as we only have one on the roster. Maybe Bennett is going to play that role, but I’d like to have one more traditional FB.
–Glad we didn’t draft a WR. We didn’t need one.
–I’m not surprised they didn’t draft a OT. After all, we did draft two of them next year, just signed Flo to another 3 years, and have a solid player in Columbo.
–I’m a little surprised they didn’t draft an interior o-linemen.
–They now have a stable of guys that can return kicks and punts; Felix Jones, Pacman, and some of the new corners.
–I’m shocked we didn’t get a NT at some point. This may haunt us at some point next year.
–I love that we got Detroit’s #4 and Cleveland’s #3 next year. Hopefully those teams we suck and it’s fun to root against them.
I’m glad this draft is over. I can get on with my life.
CaptainComeback:
Jerry really dissapointed today. Our day 2 haul was garbage. All this trading back when he should have traded up. I’m trying to be optimistic but I’m hoping we don’t look back at this draft in 3 years and laugh. Jerry, please hire a GM. I love you but you need some help.
CaptainComeback:
I guess we can now say Wow!….
….Wow! ‘m disappointed.
BishopWest:
Consider what our defensive backfield will look like now with the Nickle Package in place:
T.Newman
A.Pacman Jones
K.Hamlin
A.Henry
M.Jenkins
Or would you rather go back to last year?
T.Newman
J.Reeves
K.Hamlin
A.Henry
P.Watkins
TR2TO4TD:
rubin to the browns
CaliFanInTx:
I’ve been paying more attention to the draft these past few years…fortunately, it’s been much easier and more robust with the internet as a tool.
I’m a long time Cowboy’s fan going back to the Staubach era, and consider myself more than a casual Fan.
My take is that Jerry Jones is turning into a pretty good GM. Taking this year and last year’s draft as a whole, I like what we are doing, overall.
I’ve concluded that we do painstaking analysis on the players, our own needs, and what other teams are contemplating. Every move that we made seems to be well thought out value and flexibility.
I’m a little surprised (although I shouldn’t be…) that many fans are still critical about the draft that we just had…granted, I’m still a little torn on the Mendenhall decision, but I can conclude that the F. Jones pick was the safer decision.
I think the moves we just made this weekend strengthened our team in all the right places and has put us in the Superbowl.
sam0807:
The best thing we did was draft Mike Jenkins at 25.
The second best thing we did was get extra picks next year.
The third best thing we did was draft Tashard Choice in the 4th.
The 4th best thing we did was get another CB in Round 5.
Otherwise, this was an unmittigated disaster at 22 and 61 which are both big time potential busts IMO. At least Choice has carried the load for a team. Why we pass on Mendenhall because he would try and beat out Barber, I have no earthly idea. Why do we always draft a worthless TE with a high pick, as much as I didnt like Fasano i like this pick at 61 less…
This draft smacks of Jerry Jones, hire a GM.
cormanman:
CaptainComeback,
who did you want to trade up for specifically?
CaliFanInTx:
No way that Jones and Bennett are busts…we just picked up a Reggie Bush and Antonio Gates this year.
MUSICCITYNORM:
Antonio Gates? Are you sure?
TR2TO4TD:
bust? come on… felix jones won’t be carrying the load for us… he will probably catch more screens, slot routes and run reverses than line up the backfield… we didn’t draft him to be a rb, we drafted him to add a dimension.. a great dimension in my mind
CaliFanInTx:
Nothing is for sure in the NFL…but spent some time looking Bennett up and this kid looks like the real deal…he would have been a 1st rounder had he played in a school that actually focused on the pass.
CaliFanInTx:
I think some fans are going to change their tune about F. Jones when he starts to busts some short dump offs from Romo for touchdowns. This kid has great eyes and is proactive.
CaliFanInTx:
Our offense was pretty amazing last year…I think we will be off the charts this year with our draft picks. Do any of you guys actually think we would have taken Jones over Mendenhall without the support of Jason Garrett. I think Garrett has bg plans for both Jones and Bennett.
CHARB:
The 59th DE had turf toe all year from a small school and Wade says he runs real fast.
Wow,…Rowdy may have selected him
CaliFanInTx:
It looks to me like the kids we drafted are high character, very hard working individuals. We’re building something to last…
UnconventionalWisdom:
If we can’t cover people now it’s time to blame the coaching!
CaliFanInTx:
The Cowboys have a plan and aren’t just shooting from the hip…why did we take a RB first before a CB?…and why did we spend draft picks to move up 3 spaces (from 28 to 25) to get our CB? Everything had to unfold that way for us to get the picks we got. Look at the board…I think the Boys spent weeks contemplating all aspects of the draft before it started…
jerryw:
jerry and steven said this was a “now” draft..lets look at things..we wanted more screens…sweeps and draws with jj..what is fj gonna get?..you guessed it…we got 3cbs pacman, jenkins, scandrick…another rb …a big fast atheletic te..i’m not sure about walden…but also our special teams has gotten alot better…scandrick has blocked a few of kicks and returned a few…so has bennett…fj,aj and jenkins on returns..it’s a little better than some of you are making out..
CaliFanInTx:
With our CB situation now…we can’t be held for ransom by T New next year…doesn’t this seem eerily similar to New England’s situation with Asante Samuels? NE England really wanted to keep Samuals, but the dollars just didn’t make sense. I really want to kee T New…great great guy with big skills, but what if he wants crazy money?
Same with Barber…pay the man, but if he won’t take less than LT money…we have our RB tandem for nest year in Jones and Choice.
THEAIRFORCEBAT:
I think that Bennett might provide Dallas with something that no other team in the NFL has. Two athletic pass catching tightends.
I think that the fact that they didn’t reach for a widereceiver is a testament to Jerry Jones finally starting to get it.
It will be very interesting to see their two tightend sets, it’ll make Dallas pretty tough on the goalline.
cowboy bert:
OK, after all of the whining yesterday about trading a TE for a 4th, just to draft another in the 2nd—the question, as I understand it, is why let somebody adequate go just to replace them with somebody else at the same position.
The whole draft did that.
Julius Jones
Tyson Thompson
Jacques Reeves
Nathan Jones
Keith Davis
Akin Ayodele
Anthony Fasano
All were adequate, and all could still be in Dallas, but they were replaced by
Felix Jones
Tashard Choice
Adam Jones
Mike Jenkins
Orlando Scandrick
Zack Thomas
Martellus Bennett
Every one of these looks like an upgrade.
On the other hand
Jason Ferguson
Was let go and not upgraded. That may end up being a problem.
Chandus:
Interesting.
Many people believed that the weakest unit on the team was the RBs. Others thought about CB. Others the WRs. Some thought NT. The team thought let’s help the positions of need and the STs at the same time.
The return units needed help, we acquired Adam Jones before the Draft. Felix Jones, Mike Jenkins and Orlando Scandrick also have returner experience.
The coverage units needed help, too. Jones, Jenkins, Martellus Bennett, Scandrick and Erik Walden have experience on every coverage unit.
It’s a really interesting Draft, STs might have been the most upgraded unit on the team, above RB and CB… And that’s a really good thing, because Jones, Jenkins, Choice and Scandrick are helpfull additions at RB and CB.
casual1031:
ok soooooooo.. wasnt a suporter of felix, but now hes a cowboy.. so im now his biggest fan and will look at nothing but the positives from this time on.. HOWEVER i will point out a fact that seemed incredibly akward to me in which he basically was selected over mendenhal because he was a better BACKUP hahaha.. just find it funny we could have had a guy with better skills and bigger worth 25 touches a game opposed to a guy who will be a part time employee, just because mendenhall didnt suck more. lol
ANYWHO, whats done is done, lets hear it for felix!!
WHY ALL THE BITCHING!?!?!?!? felix was a top three runner some people would say top two.. jenkins was supposibly the BEST CB in this draft before the combine, and is the most pro ready corner in the draft.. we got um both!!!!! those of you bitching about grabbing a TE.. STOP, we needed one!!! we delt our #2 (who wasnt all that great in the first place and had a serious shoulder injury) the night before the draft even began, so it actually became a position of need.
on top of all this we get pacman, whos skills speak for themselves in both the reutrn game and on defense.. he was VERY solid and a top ten corner in 06. we get TEN TIMES BETTER as a football team if we leave today with just what we have. allthough im not convinced jerry is done this offseason, i think he will get a veteran wideout.. backup QB isnt very needed considering we have johnson penciled in till next year.. the only thing i honestly dont like thus far is not getting a nose tackle. but we were in this boat last season and we turned out just fine..
soooooooo i part ways with you all and congradulate jerry jones. ahta boy jerry.go get our vet. WR
THEAIRFORCEBAT:
Chandus: I totally agree. Instead of drafting a WR that might need time to develop, Dallas tried to get instant contributers.
I like this draft alot more and believe that Bennett will be a huge upgrade over Fasano, who was drafted high I believed on Parcells relationship with Charlie Weis.
stoproyce:
Unconventional, Yes we have plenty at the moment ,were we gonna go grab another project ?You bitch and moan about not having receivers in the pipeline what are austin ,hurd and stanback. If the coaches ,whom i’d guess know a bit more about our talent at the position than you, think we are good enough there to not spend even one pick on a sub par group of recievers. I will go by their judgement none of us know how far stanback has progressed the coaches seem psyched on him and this is a do or die year for both austin and hurd and they desreve the chance.I bet if we offered either of the to parcells he’d have given us at least a fourth or fifth for either. Not to mention we picked up two potential targets out of the back field or slot .Bennet could be awesome some of the reports i’ve read rate him very very highly the dude was a starter on the basketball team as well. Not to mention Felix jones can very easily move into the slot and create massive headaches for defenses. This was a very good draft the actual needs of this potentially great team were addressed not only did we create depth at positions that were desperately thin we butressed ourselves against the impending Big money demands at both spots .We gave ourselves options. Now if its a choice between newman and all of the other huge money deals on the horizon we have some leverage.
scout:
Did you guys hear Ed Wherter say that Dallas was in contract negotiations with Terence Newman? He said it yesterday.
I hope Dallas gets that done. He is one of the best players in the NFL. He is the best slot defender in the NFL. He is an elite player and class act, and his skill set just doesn’t come around very often. If it does, you have to be in the top 5 to draft a player like Newman. He takes his craft seriously, and he has plenty of football left in him. He is built for the long haul.
When I see Mike Jenkins play north and south on his highlights, he looks like a faster version of Asante Samuels. I know that I have already said that, but I expect him to really help our secondary this year. He looks really good breaking on the ball on the outside or edge. He breaks fast on the ball. Also, he is an outstanding deep ball defender. He looks good defending the post.
I don’t think Jenkins is a slot player, but I think you can play him on the edge and put him in a deep safety positon in sub-packages if you want to take advantage of his very fast closing speed and get him on the field more.
I read where Stewart said this. When Nate Jones was in the slot, the ball went at Nate Jones. When TNEW is in the slot, the ball goes to the edge, and that is where we want it to go.
Jenkin on the edge could be a pick machine. He really closes fast on the ball. Drafting a 4.38 CB at #25 is unheard of. I read where Dallas’ scouts where split on DRC. Also, Stewart said they wanted to avoid Talib. I think McKelvin was the only guy they had ahead of Jenkins. However, Jenkins has better ball skills than McKelvin.
I did forget about Pacman. Jerry gave up a fourth this year, and then got the fourth back at the very top of the round 4.
Jerry stole Pacman and took the Titans coveted player at # 22 (Felix Jones) and ended up with the first pick of the fourth round.
That is what I call revenge.

You can make an argument that we did the right thing by not drafting a WR, but to say we don’t need one is ludicrous.
We are a TO injury or exit via FA from having a below average group of WRs. And I think I’m being generous with that characterization.
Go back and watch some tape from the end of last season if you don’t believe me.
I hope some of our guys develop and my fear is misplaced, but tey haven’t really shown much to this point.

Man, do I miss Florida weather. How the hell do you guys play golf up here? I’m frickin’ frozen.
Anyway, I’m really pissed at Seattle. They scooped us at every turn after giving us a gift in the first.
However, when I look at it like the Fasano/Bennett trade, it doesn’t look too bad.
Basically its:
Choice/Scandrick + 2009 3rd & 4th round draft choices
vs.
Bryant/FB/S
othello250:
Draft was a mixed bag. I like the first day. I question the Walden pick, seems like he could have been signed as a free agent.

OK, with my 6 point Wonderlic score, you have to wonder about any comment I might make… but..
I like Felix Jones, and after lookig at his films, I like him even more. I liked Mendenhall too, but correct me if I’m wrong, Felix has less wear on his tires and is a better pass receiver out of the backfield!? I don’t think Jerry articulated it well, but having a tandem set up is better than having a single stud. They’re fresher, and last longer. And even if you don’t like the Cat or the Barbarian, we now have a Choice.
Bennett is a big target for Romo and one more worry for a Defensive Coordinator.
I’m not sure if Ratliff or Tank Johnson is the ideal NT, but there may be some FAs available before training camp that we could get a good years play out of. Somebody has to be released from some of these teams to make room for the new draftees.
It’s gonna be fun to watch what Redball does with his new offensive toys, and what Wade/Stewart do with their new ballhawks.
Fighter15:
BS.PN is interviewing Caleb Cambell…sure wish we would have drafted him over a true flyer at OLB. While safety may not have been the biggest priority, the feel good press would have been great.
donnyposner:
I’m disgusted with this 2nd day.
Does Jerry just like to here his name called associated with a trade. Is this PR?
What the hell does he think he is doing trading from spots where he can grab some good players he could use on this team.
It’ll be very difficult to blog the next 2 weeks cause I don’t even want to hear an explanation.
More idiocy.
sam0807:
I love yor optimism BUT
F. Jones will never see a pro bowl. I bet Mendenhall makes at least two.
You think Bennett is like Antonio Gates? wholly smokes dude, come play in my fantasy league this season, $500 entry LOL
A lot of this is we’ll see, but I just want to be on record, before the season that this was a poor draft for the Cowboys save Jenkins and Choice, who very well may beat out Jones if this competition is fair to split time.
CaptainComeback:
Donny, Couldn’t agree more. About 15 posts back I said the same thing. Day 2 stunk. Disappointed this off season. I need a break for the next 2 months. Let’s go Celtics!
